You know that phrase that W screwed up, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me?" Shame on Gaia. I kept hearing Hermione in my head saying, "What an idiot." She makes the same mistakes over and over and over again. She changes her mind every 5 seconds about everything. This was readable enough, but the ending was too cookie cutter.

The book starts with members of Sylum on their way to the Enclave. Not everyone has decided to leave the marsh but many have. Gaia and Leon's relationship has developed, leading towards marriage. Gaia is still coming to terms with being a leader and choosing Leon over other options. When they reach the Enclave things are as expected. They are not entirely welcomed and they find the community much changed. Many of the adopted children are seeking their birth families. The Protectorate has started a program where women are vessels giving birth for infertile families within the Enclave. Gaia does not trust their intentions with this. Gaia tries to negotiate with the Protectorate but things do not go well. Gaia has something the Protectorate wants and Gaia does not want to give it which I believe is perfectly understandable. Gaia and those outside the walls try to dispose the Protectorate but things do not go as planned. The ending is not necessarily happy but some things have turned for the better.

The plot twist felt so odd but it was a good kind of different.

I don't think I've been as satisfied with a trilogy as I have this one. Promised was a thrilling conclusion. The beginning of the book picks up a year after the ending of [b:Prized|9424367|Prized (Birthmarked, #2)|Caragh M. O'Brien|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1390366990s/9424367.jpg|14308787]. We find out that Gaia "chose" Leon but this book made it sound like Peter was never even a choice. Gaia and her people travel to her homeland where the Enclave still rules and has even changed the rules by having young girls be surrogates in a "baby-making factory." Thus starts the journey of self-discovery for Gaia and negotiations with the Protectorat escalate into an all out rebellion. Some of the scenes in this book brought tears to my eyes and the violation of Gaia was heartbreaking.

Some of the characters were hard to decipher whose side they were really on. One that comes to mind is the doctor Myrna. She doesn't really seem to be on either side- all she wants is to help people and cause the least amount of bloodshed.

Gaia goes through a brief period of when she and some of her people doubt her leadership decisions. Her doubts are what made her question herself and led her to really discover who she is as a person.

Overall, like I said, an amazing conclusion that allowed the two worlds portrayed in the first two books to collide and become one. I do wish we could have read about Gaia and Leon's wedding though ;)

This book is featured on my Top 20 list for 2013 on my blog.

After waiting a good year for this to come out, when it finally did, I could not put it down. It was a great end to the Birthmarked series. If your looking for a great post apocalyptic series, look no farther.

Leon and Gaia are amazing I love them both to pieces. The ending had me crying and rooting for them both to overcome the dangers. When they took her eggs I wanted to kill the Protectorat. I mean really? That is evil. The fact that she still overcame it and all the torture, she is the model female heroine. And Leon? Well I love this boy. I felt terrible that he had to watch the torture, you can truly see his love for Gaia in this book. He is amazing with Maya as well. I feel terrible that they will never have children of their own together. ): But this book is realistic, they didnt walk away from the battle triumphant and without any loss. They lost friends, their futures, and gained uncontrollable fears. I wish there would have been more Leon and Gaia one on one, or maybe Leon, Gaia, and Maya as a family. IT is awesome that Gaia got to meet and develop a relationship with both of her brothers. Her parents would have been so happy.

I will probably reread this somewhere down the line just because it is an amazing, original trilogy.

This book was exactly the conclusion we needed.

I liked a lot of things that happened in this book, or I guess I should say I liked how some things were handled.

But then. Leon was stupid. He couldn’t put his own baggage with his father aside, or he couldn’t recognize it enough to realize his judgment might not be the best, so he wasn’t helping.

Gaia was stupid. She had no idea how to be a leader. She walked into every. single. trap.

And then there wasn’t any kind of resolution. It acted like there was, but there wasn’t.
