A beautifully woven story(ies) about grief, war, family, occupation, friendship.

Set in 2016 and earlier and taking place in the West Bank and Jerusalem, there are some obvious differences between these stories and the current war in Gaza - but, (despite the differences) the details here about place and people help me feel better connected to people in Gaza now.

This book is very complicated to wrap in a review.
Sometimes I felt very lost but at the same time you always followed the characters and the storyline.
I would not describe this book as a light read but it is definitely worth the read and tells a lot of the personal stories of Rami and Bassam but at the same time its about politics, grief and two colliding worlds. Really an extraordinary book!

Apeirogon is a book which is poetic and intellectual. Heavily guided by true events, it reads more like a biography than fiction at times as it follows the lives of Bassam and Rami - a Palestinian and an Israeli brought together by the shared tragedy and grief that comes with loosing a child. I loved that McCann used this book to focus on people on an individual and personal level. Apeirogon paints neither side as the unequivocal 'bad guys'. Instead McCann acknowledges atrocities on both sides of the Occupation and explores politics, power, and propaganda as the forces of evil, while allowing his characters to simply be people - products of their circumstances who have done bad and good. He allows them to go on a very human journey, to feel and discover at a pace which is believable. I was deeply immerse and moved by the prose, and left hopeful by the dialouge that McCann has created with this book. It is brutal, but also very tender and beautiful.

This is flat-out one of the most incredible books I've ever read. Everything about it -- the unusual structure, the compelling characters. the level of detail, the expository/informational interludes -- is extraordinary. Apeirogon was up for the Booker in 2020, the year that Shuggie Bain won. Although Shuggie Bain in a wonderful book, Apeirogon is a miracle. You have to read it yourself to see what an achievement it is.

Apeirogon: a shape with an infinitely countable number of sides.

This was wonderful and different. It’s written mostly as a series of numbered chapters or vignettes, as short as a sentence or as long as a few pages. It’s about Israel and Palestine, one of the most complex international land and statehood disputes in existence, and shouldered in this book by two fathers who’ve lost daughters to the conflict. Apeirogon is an apt metaphor for this story, and all the stories contained within. It reminded me a lot of Olga Tocarczuk’s Flights in its structure. It’s amazing how a book with such a disparate path can come together so strongly.
