Captain Jack's Woman
3.5 Stars

After returning from an unsuccessful season in London, Katherine "Kit" Cranmer is eager to experience once again the freedom and adventure of her childhood on the Norfolk coast. Disguised as a young lad, Kit inadvertently finds herself recruited to be the leader of an inept group of smugglers, but things go awry when a rival gang lead by the notorious Captain Jack takes over. Jack, a man with secrets of his own, soon unmasks Kit and the two engage in a classic battle of the sexes in which only one can be the victor.

A quick and steamy read, but the heroine's willfulness and the hero's overbearing attitude undermine the romance.

Kit is a strong willed and headstrong heroine, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, she is also spoiled and reckless, which leads her straight into TSTL territory.

Jack is arrogant and self-indulgent. He has absolutely no compunction against seducing a young girl whom he believes to be of low birth, and then, upon realizing his error, demanding that she marry him to assuage his warped sense of honor. This type of hypocrisy is exceedingly irritating and does not endear him to the reader.

In terms of the plot, there is a lot going on with smugglers and traitors, gender-swapping and mistaken identities. All of this has a great deal of potential if one is paying attention, but some of the situations feel forced and contrived.

Despite these issues, the story is entertaining and the hero and heroine have intense chemistry even if neither is particularly likable. Recommended for Laurens fans, but suggest that newbies read the first few Cynster books first.

Not my usual genre. Last time I read anything like this was 2021 and before that 2016. Looking back at those, they all got 1 or 2 stars and this one was a bit better than those but still nothing higher.  It was free on audible so I just thought why not.

Typical regency romance novel. Kit returns to the country after several years in London. Dresses as a boy, becomes leader of a smuggling group. Meets captain jack and there you have it basically.  It is very dated in the regency period with attitudes re men and women. That doesn't particularly bother me as that was what it was like then but some people may find it offensive.  Beware though, there is LOTS of sex in it. I got fed up of reading those parts after a while, just graphic and repetetive.

I loved it the first time, I love it now as a re-read.
The tension, whole this charade about a heroine dressing up as a man ad the tension...oh, man, the tension! It was almost impossible to put it down! 5 stars.

I wanted to finish this book but in all honestly I can’t. I’m usually all for smut but when it’s every time she goes just to have a conversation but instead just lets the man have his way with her, i really cannot deal with it. The writing of this book I also found quite strange, as I did not like how it jumped between character points of view back and forth so often.

Review - A lot of Laurens's heroines also seem to spend the novel in breeches, and I would quite like to see something a bit different. I did love both Kit and Jack, and as a couple they were even better, even if their approach to telling each other things was so frustrating! I enjoyed this book, but I was a little disappointed. For me it was a little repetitive in places, and it did drag on. However, I did also enjoy it. Laurens always has a touch that draws you right into the Regency world of her books and this was no exception.
