The retellings in other media have left out a lot of the story that changes the negative space. Fantasy often doesn't use negative space but there is a lot here.

2.5 stars. It’s so hard cause I love the movies, I have seen the movies so many times but the books just don’t do it. I will still read the last two, I’ve always wanted to but could never get into them. This is one of the only cases where I believe the movies are better then the books.

I've read this series many times and loved it. Listening to the audiobook narrated by Andy Serkis made me love it even more. I strongly recommend it.

Started off strong then the dialogue got repetitive and it kinda dragged on.. (had to resort to listening to the rest of it on audible

The first time I read this I loved it. This time it didn't do much for me. I found myself trudging through it.

This is one of my favorite books! As a side note, they did an amazing job between the book and film. I love this story, the characters, scenery, poetry, and the adventure. I can't wait to read the last two of the trilogy. Sam and Galadriel are definitely my favorite characters. The story is so fascinating, and just the whole world Tolkien created is so bloody fantastic. For a story about people walking around most of the time and having a lot of conversations, it is really interesting. I couldn't put the book down!
I wish I had read this book a long time ago! I tried to in 4th grade, but it was too big of a book. I'm glad now, many years later I've grown to love reading so much more and read this book. I highly recommend this book! The story is so great.

The first in the LotR trilogy and my favourite book of the three. The story of a journey which, although exciting, stays pretty much on Hobbit-sized scale throughout - the adventure gets much bigger later. That's why I love this book so much. It's like a walking holiday... with orcs and deadly peril.
I'm re-reading LotR this winter. I thought I knew this book well but I'm seeing things I hadn't notice before (or forgotten). Boromir, for example, is SUCH a whiny b!tch! Sam has so much more wisdom & dignity than I remembered too.

Updated review: I’m still really torn over this book and what to rate it. It’s such a classic but it’s so difficult to get through. I’m keep it at three stars purely because I found myself not wanting to listen to it at all. But LOTR is my favorite movie series of all time, I love the story so much.
