A solid page-turner on a significant but forgotten portion of American naval and scientific history. Philbrick describes the journeys of the Ex. Ex. in such a way that it kept me intrigued to read what they experienced and what challenges they faced next. Even though it was written by an author known for his maritime histories, it was still approachable and enjoyable for those not quite so familiar with the Age of Sail.

This book is taking me a while to read because the story isn't quite as gripping as In the Heart of the Sea but it is a very interesting story both from a historical standpoint and because of the personal stories going on with the captain and crew.

Really found this to be fascinating. The author is clearly an authority and has done his research. His narrative is both engrossing and researched. He has an opinion and that is presented, but he also shares the facts and lets the reader evaluate them based upon the context and the times.

It is fascinating to think of exploration in this time period. With today's total connectivity, to read about such a disconnected process and trip was worthwhile in its own right. To consider how alone one would be sailing around the Pacific not even including the trip to Antarctica. Amazing.

Pretty good. Very interesting. Reads like a fictional novel, but non fiction!
