Madeline Miller could write a 10 page novel, charge me £100 and I would still read it.

Although this is a very short story, it left an impact! Almost immediately I felt angry towards Galatea’s husband/creator - treating her like his possession to fulfill his fantasy rather than an individual with her own desires and needs. I have yet to read any of Madeline Miller’s other works although they are constantly recommended, so I’m definitely going to prioritize reading them. I always loved Greek mythology as a child and this story is definitely reigniting that interest

Galatea is a very short story, not even a novella, a Greek mythology retelling of Pygmalion's story from the point of view of Galatea. Galatea’s husband is a sculptor who has prayed to the gods for his statue to come to life. As his creation, Galatea is expected to be nothing but obedient but all she desires is freedom.  I was unfamiliar with this particular story before reading this short book, but it was strongly recommended during Bookclub for Annie Bot. Which is very fitting, as they have loosely similar storylines of a man who created his companion and how that relationship unfolds. For me, the book was too short to become acquainted well enough with any of the characters to feel anything for them. The writing is good, just too quick. Although the ending is very satisfying.

This book was short and quick but meaningful and empowering for young women such as myself. It was written beautifully, as all of Madeline Miller’s books are. Solide 3.8/5 stars for me!
