“I am as you see me now, without a shred of my armor…You have taken it all from me…I have no control where you’re concerned. I never have.” ~ Viscount St. Clare

Gentleman Jim was fascinating, intriguing, and most definitely swashbuckling!

Margaret Honeywell and Nicholas Seaton, childhood best friends/soulmates were torn apart when Nicholas was framed for stealing her family jewels. Destined for the hangman’s noose, Maggie, under the cover of darkness, sets him free in order to spare his life.

Ten years later, Maggie remains unwed and has accepted that Nicholas must have met his end since he has never returned to her as he promised he would.

The mysterious Viscount St. Clare has newly arrived in London after being on the continent for many years. When he accepts the challenge to duel Margaret’s guardian, he receives an unexpected visit from Margaret herself. An encounter that will change the predetermined courses of their lives.

This story is chocked full of action, with suspense and romance. I love so many things about it, from the forbidden love, to the dangerous duels and highwaymen, hidden identity and a second chance romance when a long lost love returns. These characters are vivid, full of raw emotion, and follow their heart instead of their head even when it is not wise. The viscount is daring and dashing, devastatingly handsome; a man who has risen above circumstance and station, refined, yet robust, polished and passionate.

This story is inspired by two classic novels, one being The Count of Monte Cristo, a treasured favorite of mine. I knew I had to read it and was not disappointed! Wonderful, extremely romantic, a definite page turner!

Loved this book! Such a great original storyline and loved Maggie and Nicholas story. It was full of ups and downs and at many times seemed like there was no way forward but love always finds a way. This book was full of wonderfully written characters even if they weren’t wonderful people, the bad guys were written so well you couldn’t help but to throughly dislike them. I can’t wait to read the next book and have enjoyed this series so far

Meeting your soulmate again with no memory of both your past...is the kind of drama I'd welcome anytime.

This girl, Margaret Honeywell, has a monstrous emotional control, like I was there bawling my eyes out while his long past lover kept telling her he isn't his guy...and this girl–with lung illness, seemingly an invalid, just lost all her family, and left with an evil bastard to marry–JUST STANDS THERE!

like girl, is your favorite activity crying inside? I'm seriously scared to death of your lifeline. You don't deserve this pain!

But, emotional outburst aside, this book did the plot justice. It was vanilla, fluffy romance with delicious drama with a swoon-worthy hero and a lovely heroine.

This reads like a modern version of a classic 19th century novel. The suspense, the drama, the love story...it's all absolutely thrilling. The romance between Maggie and Nicholas is just heart-stopping and I loved how Matthews leaned all the way into the adventure and the drama with this one. The writing is lovely as always and I adored all the historical details, especially the fashion. This was fun, moving, and pure excellence from start to finish.

I enjoyed Maggie’s stubborn and spitfire character who wasn’t afraid to fight for what she wanted and for those she loved. Her grace and forgiveness towards St Clare was admirable. I didn’t feel like I completely connected with St Clare but I mostly liked his character nonetheless. He was a good opponent to Fred and was realistically flawed.

Wholesome regency romance with a touch of swashbuckling. Premise: rich girl loves poor boy, poor boy driven away by rich love rival, poor boy returns years later as a gentleman but refuses to admit his identity…

One of those books where you know how it ends before you pick it up, but sometimes that’s just what you need ;)

I liked this a lot! Full of adventure and mystery and romance. Nicholas and Maggie were really cute, but I didn’t love this one as much as book one.
