~Potential Spoilers~

Um. I'd have to categorize this book as a well-written ramble about sex and alcohol that goes on for a very long time. Oh yeah, and the guy works at a post office.

It was definitely not a book for me and despite it disagreeing with me from the beginning, I pushed through. I'm glad I did though, because despite all the strange and useless ramblings of a hopelessly sad man, I wasn't as bored as I could have been. In fact, I got more and more into the rhythm of the book as it went along. This is probably because the author is quite a good writer.

Clearly, others have loved this book far more than I. So perhaps I've missed the book's crucial message. Oh well, onwards to other stories!

There's a huge backlash against Bukowski these days, due to the whole anti-feminist nature of his work, and his percieved egotism.... but I kind of think that's the whole point behind it really. Maybe not the best book to read in your later years as it's all fairly immature, and by this point I've grown out of temp jobs, but still something mockingly sincere about the whole of his ouvre.

Endlessly funny book. Crass, dirty, delving into the deepest reality of capitalism without recourse to any flowery metaphors. Chinaski is the ideal absurd character, living day by day for immediate pleasures and constantly wandering.
