I liked it because it was so fun to read, I could read for hours because I couldn't stop, but I thought that in the end Margo and Q should have got together like an "happy ending" but I liked the ending as well

I actually really liked this book, except for the ending. I hated the ending.

Content warning: Manic Pixie Dream Girl

I don't know why I torture myself with reading John Green's books. Other than to shut people up in saying "I'm obviously not reading the right ones because he's such a great author". Which he's not but that's my opinion and not the opinion of others.

I often feel like I'm in a severe minority of people who don't like his books. As of this, I've read 2 of his books. The first was TFIOS and that was while I was waiting for a manager to get out of the meeting they were in so they could interview me to work at a bookstore so I occupied my time by reading a book (and this was around the time it had recently come out or everyone was talking about how great it was or something). I was wholly unimpressed and had multiple people telling me after how wrong I was (in fact I still do have people telling me how wrong I am in my dislike of the book and for those who want to tell me that about this book or that, go ahead and come at me. My taste is obviously different than yours and we're not going to agree).

Anyway, MPDG makes me feel like vomitting. Yeah supposedly this book is suppose to subvert the trope and be a deconstruction. It doesn't and isn't. Fuck it takes 199 pages for Q to come to this realisation: "She was not an adventure. She was not a fine and precious thing. She was a girl." I'm so sick of this thing in pop culture (movies and tv shows and books) that girls aren't seen as people. They're mysterious. And precious. And an entirely different species. They're not. THEY'RE PEOPLE. We need to stop perpetuating this trope bullshit that girls are alien.

The first chapter feels like it took me by the hand and walked me through constantly reminding me of things that happened because obviously I can't remember one paragraph to the next. -_- It's initializing and insulting. And if I never have to read the name Margo Roth Speigelman again it will be too soon. Using full names repeatedly is ANNOYING AS SHIT.

So, if you are a fan of John Green, by all means read this book. If you're not and don't like MPDG, DON'T.

I really liked this book and I'm glad that I did read it, because I didn't remember looking for Alaska that good. It was just all of this tension that John Green built up first when he foreshadowed that something will happen with Margo like how Q pointed out "I believed her smile" or how she seemed to be sad! And I thought "Margo's going to kill herself and Q will be too late and will find her dead"
But on the other hand I wasn't quite sure and surprise "she was still alive" everything I could think was how john Green let Alaska die and god Margo reminded me so much of her. But he also killed of Gus and Hazel. I really liked the ending because although I like tragic endings this was tragic without anyone dying and It just really made my heart bleed.

Best book so far this year. (Yes, I know it's only February.) Still.

Great writing generally leaves me feeling one of two ways: as if I should NEVER. WRITE. AGAIN., or as if I should neverstopWRITING!!!! Somehow, this book left me with both feelings. I had so much to say about Margo Roth Spieglelman (and the word Spiegleman itself!), and the construction of paper towns (and the idea of paper towns!), and Q and his amazing friends who didn't tell him to go screw himself when he decided to do a bunch of incredibly risky/stupid/ and/or ridiculous things, but instead showed up for him and made him show up for them, and just rocked, in general.

But then I read more about it - fan stuff, and commentary and reviews -, and I watched a ton of Vlog brothers videos (obsession activated!) and read all of that commentary and stuff, and now I feel like... I have nothing smart enough to say because geniuses (a lot of them who are half my age) have already discussed it all in depth long before I even read it. Which is fine; because all of those things are just totally amazing, and I will glom on them. (But I still can't read TFiOS, people: I don't think I can handle the sads just yet.)

But I still want to blame my writing slump on John Green. (Which only works if John Green were code for "I am being lazy", which it is definitely NOT.)
