I expected something at first, then i got another thing, which I thoroughly liked and was invested, and then i got what i wanted at the beggining, and wasn't doing it for me. expectations really are destroyers

This book is a good mix of academic and cultural discussion of yokai and actual folklore concerning them, but it drags at times. The first chapter was a great intro, but I lost a fair amount of interest then until I got to the codex. The codex itself was fascinating, with lovely illustrations and a good balance of primary source quotation and paraphrasing. Some of the stories (like 口裂け女) will definitely stick with me.

Not going to lie, I skipped over the first section of this book after struggling with it for some time. And after reading all the reviews complaining about how dry and difficult to read it was.
The codex section was very interesting and it will remain a good reference book but not one to read cover to cover.
P.S. take a shot for every Studio Ghibli mention.
