I could not put it down! This is the best thriller I’ve read in ages. The scariest part is how close it comes to reality.

I really wanted to like this book and I know exactly what the author was going for, but ultimately I don’t think she had the skill set to really execute it properly. A lot of the build up lacked urgency and was kind of nebulous, the middle third dragged, and the last bit was like a completely insane action movie. At least that bit was entertaining and somewhat satisfying, I guess, but man was the pacing off.

I also didn’t care for the main character at all, which was rough given that it’s written in first person and she’s supposed to sell us the horror and urgency of the situation. The book did really make me hate white people even more than I usually do tho, so at least there’s that.

The blurb on the back of this book says "Rear Window meets Get Out," and I guess I would agree with that. Definitely got some Get Out vibes with the sinister gentrification plot. I really enjoyed the premise. It is relatable to real world issues and social injustice. Some of the villain characters really made me feel angry and had me saying "Oh hell no!" in a lot of places; and I don't think they were necessarily overwritten, because I've seen these characters in real life. I feel that Cole does her job in getting her message across. I enjoyed the thriller aspect, and there were a lot of parts that had me quickly turning the pages. I also liked that the narrative was split between Sydney and Theo.

I did feel like the pacing was off. And the last 10% of the book had my head spinning. It seemed to take a fast turn into crazy-town and everything was messy. It was an okay ending, but it just seemed to come up out of left field and didn't match up with the rest of the book, in my opinion. I still overall enjoyed the experience of reading the book and the insidious portrayal of gentrification.

While I liked the overall concept of this book; creepy plot, lots of mystery, well drawn characters, the ending felt rushed.

I received an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Gentrification as horror? It totally works. Kind of like Get Out, this novel is a heightened version of real life racism. The plot is over the top at times, but it all serves to tell the story. A fun thriller that also serves as social commentary about the devastations of systemic racism.

This is basically Jordan Peele's Get Out but about gentrification. It's exceptionally on-the-nose, lacking ANY nuance. But I was into it and would 100% watch the movie/TV version. Especially if directed by Jordan Peele.
