DNF at like 80%. It was hard to connect to the characters and was getting real boring for me. I think it's probably great for some, but I wasn't feeling it.

The magic system and the world is very interesting however, for such a long book I can’t really tell the direction it’s going in. It also felt like very little happened like relationship and character building wise. I can’t tell where the story is trying to go so I can’t give it 5 stars. As much as I like slow build magic books, this felt too slow.

Wow. A complicated world, intriguing characters, and an ever evolving plot. I loved this book but was also confused by it. I liked and didn’t like the main character.
I’m not sure I would recommend this, but wouldn’t blame you if you read it...hmmm

“Going through the mirrors requires confronting yourself. You need guts, you know, to look yourself straight in the eyes, to see yourself as you are, to dive into your own reflection. Those who hide their faces, those who lie to themselves, those who see themselves better than they are, they will never be able."
This was a great book to start the new year as it gave wintery vibes, had a main protagonist that was truly awkward and a love interest that was the definition of grumpy, and also had a lot of magic and wonderful world-building.
More on the slow-paced side and there's a lot of details that need to be given attention to as this book can be a bit complex, but truly enjoyed this French translation and will plan to pick the other books at the series at some point.

A Winter’s Promise takes place within a world where there are floating islands, which are referred to as Arks. Each Ark is very different from one another, and each Ark has an ancestral spirit that they reside over.
The main character within A Winter’s Promise is a young woman named Ophelia, who is from the Ark Anima. Everyone on Anima is somehow related to one another, all descending from their ancestral spirit, Artemis. Although all residents on Anima are related, Ophelia is quite different; she’s described as being tiny & quiet, and due to this, is taken for being timid & weak. However, each individual on Anima possesses a particular gift, and Ophelia’s gift lies in her ability to read the past lives of inanimate objects, which she is extremely powerful at and is described as the best there is. Not only this, Ophelia also has the ability to pass through mirrors, allowing her to travel great distances within Anima by walking through mirrors.
When Ophelia is promised/forced to marry a man named Thorn on a different Ark called the Pole, she is forced from her home, family, and work and is relocated to Thorn’s family home to live in secrecy. From the very first meeting, Thorn is tremendously cold and unwelcoming towards Ophelia. He gives her no sense of care or empathy, even though she has left the world she has ever known and was forced to follow him here.
Thorn comes from the Dragon Clan, which they all possess the ability to inflict pain on others, without requiring any sort of contact. However, Thorn is not considered to be a true Dragon, since he was born out of wedlock. Although a bastard, Thorn has a very influential job as treasurer to Farouk, Pole’s ancestral spirit, and due to this job and the family he comes from, he is disliked by many. The question of why Ophelia’s promised marriage was so important that she couldn’t turn it down is the question that propels the story forward. It is very obvious from the start that Thorn is not happy about it and was something he didn’t necessarily want himself.
I really enjoyed this book – I liked not knowing who to trust and at any moment, someone could backstab someone else. Although Thorn is severely standoffish, I expect their relationship to be a slow-burn, which I love. Looking forward to reading the second installment, The Missing of Clairdelune.
