I picked this up knowing it was only 244 pages. With that, I seriously enjoyed it. It was fast paced had quirky side characters and a mysterious love interest who made me smile with the banter. The mystery side of things was alright, I guessed the "bad guy" rather quickly but it keeps you wanting to read the next cause they're not the main villain(?) Anyways good series so far.

This was fun. It isn’t super well written as there are jumps in important parts that leave a reader a little turned around and spaces in the exposition that don’t give you all the context for some of the things happening. I wish the settings were explained more or better in a lot of spaces. I do enjoy the characters though. I liked the mystery aspect of it sort of. I think it was too obvious. It was also pretty clear that the magic system wasn’t fully fleshed out for the author yet as it couldn’t be explained in the book well. I think these are going to get better as things go on. I loved the romance aspect and the chemistry between the two which was unexpected and done well. I don’t think I’ll continue the series but I didn’t hate it.

I'm a sucker for "I hate you because I like you" romances and silly family members. I also love saucy and inappropriate grandma's. This was a fun and simple read. The story line isn't really spectacular but characters make up for that with their lovable personalities. Yes, the grandma is my favorite and who I aspire to be, always.

I'm on the wait list of what seems like LOADS of books. And I was out of current reads, so I went looking for something light that would be entertaining but not too captivating to put down once one of those long awaited books came in. I think it was a success story.

This is a very fluffy book that looks to be part of a much larger story. At the end I felt that I had read chapter one...with so much more left to be resolved. It's a story of a young woman who suddenly finds herself kidnapped (not really) by long lost aunts and delivered to a magical realm where she is to learn mixology...being the greatest and most powerful mixologist of all time. Of course there is a love interest, but they decide that it's not right for them to be involved so they decide to be friends only. And someone is trying to kill her.

None of those points is resolved. The reader is just introduced to this magical isle, the whacky family that resides there, and the potential story lines that are to come. I doubt that I will continue reading, the mysteries are not that great. But....this is important, I enjoyed the light and fluffy read.

This was a short romp. Not award winning literature. But it was fun and quirky. If the next book in the series is on Kindle Unlimited, I'll definitely pick it up. It was nice to read a.. sort of "paranormal romance" (is that even what they're called these days?) that wasn't basically porn-on-paper. Characters were likable, if somewhat predictable. But it's what I wanted. What I needed.

Update: I've actually spent the rest of the day (even while reading another totally unrelated book) thinking about the characters in this book. Added a star to my rating because it seem appropriate.

(book 1 of my KU trial)

This book has some really bad sections. The first part clearly was written by someone who has no idea what job in marketing entails. I almost just stopped reading this. It did just get better till chapter 20. It's was just stupid. Is this woman 30 or 16yrs old. The worse part is the man who bullies and almost kills her and she is like " don't hurt him". Has the author ever read about domestic abuse. Any modern novel should never allow this as an acceptable response to violence.

Think of this book as a chick lit version of Harry Potter, but without the compelling story.

20 something girl finds out she's a witch, goes to a mystery island to learn her trade and meet her family, but chaos ensues (murder, an evil faction, the start of a forbidden love).

Except this book answers NO questions. Why was she abandoned by her family? What happened to her mother? What about her quirky assistant? Her dad - what's up with him? I don't care if this is a series, it didn't even resolve what happened in this book.
