Seems like a book written by tiktok and somehow emphasizes things for the male gaze, with no agency for female characters.

The prose was tricky to get through in parts, it seemed like it just hadn’t been edited/proof-read which was off putting, I enjoyed characters and plot enough to keep reading however and overall found it an okay book. There are several sexually explicit scenes and also a torture scene in chapter forty so trigger warning for that.

The Night and Its Moon by Piper CJ is, literally, epic.

High fantasy isn’t my usual cup of tea, but I follow Piper on #TikTok and have been absolutely charmed by her. (Ok, I kinda want to be her when I grow up tbh. The woman has a master’s in FOLKLORE- how fucking cool is that?)

If you’re on booktok, you’ve probably run across her too. #TheNightandItsMoon is her debut novel and the first in a series. She’s actually written nearly ten books this year- 10! I decided I should get on that bandwagon early because she clearly has something to say.

Nox and Amaris have been the best of friends in a less than great situation. They were both sold to a “child mill” where they are brought up to be ready for sale to the highest bidder.

Amaris is a rare beauty with skin and hair the color of moonlight and eyes like lilacs. The matron of the mill knows what a prize she has and is patient enough to wait for the highest bidder.

Nox is Amaris’s friend and protector. She keeps her protected from the harsher realities of life- until she can’t.

After the spring market, Amaris makes a daring escape to avoid the clutches of a madame. She’s able to make her get away to a life where she can learn to be strong and become her own defender.

Unfortunately for Nox, the madame won’t leave without a consolation prize. She takes her back to her brothel, the Selkie. In time, both Nox and the madame discover there’s much more to Nox than anyone could have realized.

Both girls commit to themselves that they will find their way back to the other, no matter the time, the effort, or the cost.

As a war looms on the horizon that will affect fae, humans, and faelings alike, Nox and Amaris play their parts, make their alliances, and fight their way to reuniting.

#TNAIM is beautifully written, full of detailed descriptions of places and people in the fictional Farehold. My only criticism is that there may have been a little too much detail in some parts that slowed the story down, especially toward the end.

And my goodness! The end! I’m not going to spoil anything, but remember how I said this was part of a series? Yeah, this one ends on a #CLIFFHANGER! It was so good and now I have to wait!
