I picked this book up at random and was so pleasantly transported by Piper’s vivid writing. I shed tears, laughed, screamed, and held such strong suspense for the characters. I was so intrigued to know what else happened that when I finished the first book i had the next book already ready to go. Did not disappointed at all!

It was really nice to see representation of women together romantically. I do feel some parts moved a bit slow, but I can't wait to see more of these characters and have high hopes for what is to come.

As the author has stated on tiktok I managed to get a "super special" first edition of this book. I'm really curious to see where this story goes. I got attached to some of the characters and found myself getting really nervous during some parts. Obviously the writing isn't perfect and this book feels a bit like a prequel to the real story but I will definitely be grabbing the next book.

The first half was 5 stars- the characters, writing, twists and turns! The second half started to drag. When, it seems, the author was trying to build suspense and foreshadow, all I really felt was irritated by the monotonous whining of the characters (which felt very OUT of character for them) and the repetitive "clues" that something bad was about to happen. (How many times do the heroines have to ignore the sudden dread they feel?)

I didn’t know about the controversy about this book until I was already more than halfway through. And by that point, I honestly didn’t care! My roommate read this book and told me I had to read it as well. And I am very glad I did! I went in with just the praise of my roommate and how much I loved the cover to come out with wanting the next book in the series. This book kept surprising me with how the characters developed and the story progressed. It is on the darker side but there is a humor in it that hits right. Also something is definitely empowering with how she writes certain situations along with her characters Amaris and Nox.

Honestly, I was a little nervous to read this book after all the back and forth there’s been about it online. I know what Piper did wasn’t right, but I also know she apologized and took responsibility, so I decided to start this book as unbiased as possible.
Overall, I would say I’m impressed with it. There were quite a few errors in the grammar and writing and there were moments when I would get lost or confused in the plot, but I did thoroughly enjoy reading it. I think that there wasn’t a lot of segwey from childhood friends to being in love, but hey love can be messy and confusing. There were times when I could tell this was amateur writing, but this is a debut novel and there are bound to be kinks when you’re just starting out. Could some of it have been avoided? Sure, but I also understand how exciting it could be to get your story out into the world. I have read many books, but have never written one myself. The fact that she wrote these all so fast is an impressive feat in and of itself.
Being a part of the group myself, I felt especially seen when it came to the bisexual theme the book entails. It isn’t a theme you find all too often in fantasy books and one I would definitely like to see more of. You could tell she threw her experiences and feelings into this story and it’s characters and I loved being apart of it. I actually really enjoy backstories (they’re my favorite part of every book) and I loved how in depth this one got. I feel like it made me ready and prepared for how the characters will grow throughout the series. I also think this first book ended at the perfect spot for me to be excited to move on to the next one.
Is this book going to be everyone’s cup of tea? Probably not.
Could this book use a bit more editing?
Definitely
But I really did enjoy the heart and the story in it and I’m excited to see how the series continues.

My original rating for this book was 3 stars because I enjoyed the characters, but upon further thought I cannot honestly give it that. The scenes in this book are so overwritten, it makes you feel as though you’re dragging your feet through the story. The romance between our two protagonists is very rushed, and seemingly comes out of nowhere. It seems as though in the beginning they’re raised and have an understanding as sisters, and then all of a sudden Nox is touching herself to the thought of Amaris? Who she hasn’t seen since she was a little girl, by the way. I bought all 3 books preemptively unfortunately, so I’ll have to read the remaining two eventually but I am not looking forward to it & will most likely donate them when I’m finished. I hope the writing gets better because this story has a lot of potential.
