Sprazzi di genialità sparsi qua e lá in un libro veramente evocativo e riflessivo sotto molti punti di vista, purtroppo frenato da una trama poco coinvolgente. Bella l'idea del gioco di specchi tra libro esterno e libro interno.

Weirder than I expected.

This is the Dick book that most people have heard of, so my automatic assumption is that it must be the boring one, and I'd seen a few episodes of the Amazon series too and just assumed the book was going to be similarly straight forward and whatever. This is decades before VALIS and any of the krazy stuff so it's going to be a bit tame right? And an alternative universe where Hitler won the war? It's all been done hasn't it?

Those were my thoughts. This was the boring Dick book I had to read so I could get it out of the way. But actually, it's quite good, and the early style of his writing is very well meshed together, slightly more descriptive, a bit more "trying", but ultimately still pretty weird narratively.

Dick doesn't disappoint.

Well, some dicks do. Most dicks disappoint. But not Dick.

Lots of the actual history went over my head but I’ll definitely be thinking about this for a long time. Need to re-read in a few years after brushing up on WWII

An interesting alternative history idea -- what would the United States be like if Germany and Japan won World War II? But I didn't like the execution: I don't think the writing was very good, and it degenerated into heavy handed philosophical musings.
