Note to self: les på ny.

A writer who knows where he's going without using 600 pages to get there.

A focused, poignant story of an aged son coming to terms with his non-relationship with his Dynosian father. The story is paralelled in many ways throughout the novel, lending the reader the opportunity to draw upon surrounding events and characters in order to develop a rounder understanding of Trond, the main character.

This story is told in the classic Scandinavian style of graceful frugality of form and diction meshed with the sparse plain of time and place upon which the very dense and complex characters play out their tale. Petterson tales a whale of a tale in barely a whisper--a trait no longer seen in American novels of the day.

The 260-page story is well worth your time. As is the case with all good books, the more closely you read, the more you'll appreciate and take away.

Good writing and interesting ideas, but ultimately lackluster. A lot of the parts I liked didn’t go anywhere, and I wanted more.
