Quotes
Mika: “You’re not cold or bored?”
Jamie: “No.”
Mika: “See, I actually believe you,” she said merrily. “Because you’re kind, not nice. You’d never say you weren’t bored to be polite.”
Jamie: “You’re the only person I know who says the word nice like it’s a bad thing.”
Mika: “It’s not a bad thing at all, except when it’s all there is. A lot of nice people stop being nice when they don’t get exactly what they want.”

I loved the first 80% of this book—following Mika and her interactions with the kids and the adult residents of Nowhere House was engaging and sweet. However, I found the romance subplot clunky at best and deeply uncomfortable at worst.
The kiss scene and sex scenes were a major tone shift from the rest of the book and seemed to be narrated in a very male gaze-y way that felt pretty icky to me. Mika seemed much more passive, which frustrated me since most of the book was focused on her relationships, feelings, and desires up until that point.

Maybe the romance tropes that  fall along very gendered lines just aren’t for me!

The reading experience warmed my soul! The story was beautiful, cozy and definitely hopeful, lighthearted even. I was moved by the descriptions of family, belonging, healing and safety and I enjoyed the relationships.

Of course the story was not very surprising but honestly, I do not think that mattered. The book just makes you feel at home and loved.

I absolutely loved this one, chosen family feels, grumpy x sunshine, a journey of self-acceptance and the importance of community, and ✨ magic ✨. It has it all! It drew me in so much that I devoured it and about a day which was amazing but also left me feeling like I could read three more about the same characters.

This book is light but heartfelt with awesome characters and found family.

10/10 would recommend!

A heartwarming, cozy book about witches and family. I can't help seeing the witchiness as a metaphor for a whole host of real marginalized identities. Beautifully narrated audio as well. More of a(n urban) fantasy with a romance subplot than a romance/romantasy. One mild sex scene near the end that has people in an uproar but isnt remotely smutty or detailed.

The emotional vulnerable speeches and pep talks all felt like they were trying a little too hard to be deep and meaningful and just weren't realistic or convincing, but overall I enjoyed the cuteness of this story.

Lots of f-words, for those that are bothered. They sounded perfectly natural and realistic in the british/irish etc accents, as people really do talk that way and the casual use in a foreign accent doesnt sound so harsh to my American ears.

This is a sweet story, with a variety of characters to love, light and joyful plot with enough mystery to keep it engaging throughout. It was fun and comforting to read. I took off a star because some of the swearing and sexual dialogue in the middle felt contrived and forced, out of place within the established tone of the book. It disrupted the flow for me and felt like someone else had added in dialogue after the book was written.

A well written and thoroughly enjoyable witchy romance. Likeable, believable characters; diverse representation; and a fun premise. Loved it and am sad it’s over.
