wholesome and whimsical.

This book is like a warm hug. It’s very cute but not much depth to it. I’d compare it to a Hallmark movie. This setting is around Christmas time, as well. It’s an easy and sweet read. I’d recommend it for younger readers if it didn’t have sexual content and cursing in it.

Quotes
Mika: “You’re not cold or bored?”
Jamie: “No.”
Mika: “See, I actually believe you,” she said merrily. “Because you’re kind, not nice. You’d never say you weren’t bored to be polite.”
Jamie: “You’re the only person I know who says the word nice like it’s a bad thing.”
Mika: “It’s not a bad thing at all, except when it’s all there is. A lot of nice people stop being nice when they don’t get exactly what they want.”

I loved the first 80% of this book—following Mika and her interactions with the kids and the adult residents of Nowhere House was engaging and sweet. However, I found the romance subplot clunky at best and deeply uncomfortable at worst.
The kiss scene and sex scenes were a major tone shift from the rest of the book and seemed to be narrated in a very male gaze-y way that felt pretty icky to me. Mika seemed much more passive, which frustrated me since most of the book was focused on her relationships, feelings, and desires up until that point.

Maybe the romance tropes that  fall along very gendered lines just aren’t for me!

I absolutely loved this one, chosen family feels, grumpy x sunshine, a journey of self-acceptance and the importance of community, and ✨ magic ✨. It has it all! It drew me in so much that I devoured it and about a day which was amazing but also left me feeling like I could read three more about the same characters.

This book is light but heartfelt with awesome characters and found family.

10/10 would recommend!

The plot was very simplistic and quite refreshing. The author does a great job of adding character diversity, which is refreshing. It was indeed a nice cozy read with low stakes. I truly loved how the author described magic or potion-making. They made simple ingredients feel like they were worth thousands.

This was so lovely! A perfect palate cleanser after struggling through a high fantasy trilogy I didn't much enjoy. The characters are so loveable and sweet, and the balance between character development and plot is perfect. Just a delightful read.
