This book is gorgeous. So poetically written that when I listened to it, it almost sounded like a novel in verse. I loved the collective "we" as the narrator. It forged a bond with the reader from the first page.

At times, I struggled to follow exactly who was being talked about in a vignette but then, that's the point. The book isn't about any one person. It's about the collective experience that all brown women have.

This book isn't letting anyone tell it how it should be written or how it should sound and I loved it.

This book was very raw and I loved how we had the tiniest details of these lives. It really helped with the visualisation and made me feel very homey. I cried in the beginning because of how wholesome the family gathering part was. It really made me want to appreciate the smaller things in life and to be more present in my own. The part on the girls being shocked at being called beautiful was deep, I pray that we all can see how beautiful we are, not just on the outside, but the beauty of our souls. Never read a book like this, it's very different. It's not forced but REAL and we need that. I believe you can draw a lot of life lessons from this book ! Overall, it's a lovely book that evokes a rollercoaster of emotions.
