Tokyo Ghoul, at its heart, is a tragedy. Our protagonist, Ken Kaneki, is a lonely college student, who finds solace in books with his best friend, Hideyoshi Nagachika, at his side. Our story takes place in an alternate world, where 'ghouls', exist. Ghouls are practically human, being identical in appearance and speech, but survive by preying upon humans. Ghouls eat humans, humans hunt ghouls, they are natural enemies. None of that is on Kaneki's mind, though, when he meets Rize Kamashiro at Anteiku, a coffee shop in the 20th ward of Tokyo. In only one night, his entire life and being is turned upside down, and oooh boy, does our boy Kaneki really go through it.

TG is an absolutely fantastic series, unlike any other I've read or watched. Ishida-sensei has created such a fascinating world, where ironically, you find yourself rooting for ghouls rather than humanity. There is a fair bit of gore, and to be honest, the art style can be messy at times, but Ishida-sensei really conveys the raw emotions of the characters in a way that does transcend the pages. 10/10 recommend you pick up the entire series.

I was intrigued by the story of Tokyo Ghoul as soon as I heard about it from a friend of mine - this volume exceeded my expectations and the only complaint that I have is that I got through it in less than a day. Looking forward to Volume 2 :)
