i’ve got to say that this may be the biggest disappointment in a novel so far this year for me. since i started it, i knew this was a big book and one that people really love, so my expectations were super high.

while i didn’t hate this, i really didn’t loved it either. for me, it’s just one of those books you read and then you’re like “okay, it’s done, let’s move on”. i only felt attached to this book once while reading so yeah, i wasn’t that interested in the plot.

although, i have to say the writing was absolutely amazing, so beautiful that sometimes i found myself getting lost in it. zafon’s writing reminds me a lot of garcia marquez, i felt like this was as if he had a kid.

that being said, the book’s not perfect, there are some flaws to the plot that got me confused and wondering about. but i’m glad i read this in spanish, it was very unique.

Very well written page turner about a young man whose life gets embroiled in that of a mysterious author’s. While I appreciate the concept and the way the story unravels, I struggled to get past the author’s clear lack of understanding of all things female.

I loved this book, read it about 5 years ago and I remember staying up til very late reading with the fire on and a lamp on all cosy! I was completely hooked to it and read it in days over the school Christmas holidays. Definitely would like to re read it over the next few years.

Such a hard book to review. On one hand I really love so much of the writing (as you can see from the many highlights I’ve selected). The story is a really interesting one. On the other hand I feel like I read the book twice - once while it was happening and then once as a memoir of one of the characters - which was used to explain all of the loose ends and reveal the full story. I took my time reading it too, which probably reflects the fact that I wasn’t 100% committed. I enjoyed the fact that it was set in Barcelona which I have visited many times. This review is as disjointed as my feelings about the book are.
