3.5 rounded up to 4. This was a classic, historical novel spanning a South American woman’s life of 100 years and it delivers just that. (Depends on if you’re in the mood for that or not.) I really wasn’t feeling it about 70% through, but fortunately I began connecting more with the story as it wrapped up. Even though the storyline remained relatively interesting with lots of intense life events, it felt dull at times and lacked emotion from the narrator. I didn’t feel very attached to Violeta (until the very end) and it was hard to pick the book back up at times. But I’m glad I stuck with it...this book truly reads like you’re listening to a life story from an elderly person and took me back in time with its traditional writing style.
Spoiler
Violeta’s personality really irritated me at times. She consistently seemed so aloof, wide-eyed, and privileged throughout her life and hardly made wise decisions. But she finally starts to give back, embrace women's rights, and confesses to being "unwise" in her old age, so it made me appreciate the storyline more as she introspectively reflects on her past.kaelynreads's review against another edition
