It’s honestly just making me uncomfy. It’s not the topics in the book but just the way that it’s being read. I might try the physical book at some point but DNFing for now

I found this to be...okay. A little confused by the hype, though. I really didn't like either character--not necessarily an immediate deal-breaker for me--but Marianne had real manic pixie energy that felt dated (I mean, it IS set around 2011, so maybe that's appropriate) and Connell's constant projection was extremely frustrating to read. Overall, I'm actually surprised this was written by a woman because the whole thing had real "men writing women" vibes.

I found it a little slow at the beginning, but once you get further in the pace quickens immensely.

i am fully supportive of the hype for this book. there were so many moments while reading that i literally had to put the book down and stare into space for a moment. just to take it in.

there's something about two people who are so perfectly created for each other, meant to be together, but life gets in the way. this is just a story of normal people. there is nothing particularly astounding about either connell or marianne, other than the way they make each other feel. the way rooney describes their thought processes is so mundane yet perfect, capturing reality so wonderfully.

i love the chronology of this story, jumping forwards in time with every chapter, demonstrating the constantly changing nature of life in your early twenties. things evolve and change so quickly.

this book has come at the perfect time for me

So I just finished the audiobook, and it made such a difference. I understand why some people love it, and some people hate it.

The editing style is to throw out the window, absolute trash. The following is my interpretation, so someone else could say I’m wrong, and it could also not click with you, but it might help you a bit.
This time around I liked that I went in with the reviews of people who liked it which is “this is a book about normalcy, it’s a focus on life and relationships and being human” and it’s like it clicked in my brain.
I think for me I was expecting very beautiful writing, or a beautiful story, and none of those happen, but that’s what made it beautiful in the end. Does it make sense?
It’s like by the very last page you reflect on the story alongside the characters and see the story for what it is which is a normal story about normal people who try their best and live and learn.
Anyway I DNFed it the first time around so I get it if you do too! If you decide to keep going, good luck 🫶🏼 either way I’d love to hear your opinion on it!
