Breast and Eggs is a literary Novel by Mieko Kawakami about an aspiring novelist, 30 year old Natsuko. The book focuses on natsuko and her sister and niece as they come and visit her for 2 days, under the pretence of breast augmentation.
Breast and eggs shows the inner conflicts of women when it comes to appearance and goals. I enjoyed being able to read about the inner thoughts and opinions of the characters within the novel. I especially enjoyed the second half of the book when natsuko realised her desire to become a mother.
I felt a bit misguided by the official blurb of the novel as it provides a heavy focus on Natsuko’s sister and niece and a trip to Tokyo for a breast augmentation. This part of the blurb on encompassed about 150 pages of the book. I read a review under goodreads that stated that it felt like two unfinished stories that were stuck together to become one. I honestly couldn’t agree more with the review. I think the blurb doesn’t 100% describe what the book is about.
