I like fairy tale retellings and even if Beauty and the Beast isn't exactly my favorite option (there's a fair bit of Red Riding Hood in there as well though, I feel, and that one IS my favorite) I was intrigued. Also it's Kaori Yuki. Of course I was gonna give it a shot.
The horror aspect is on point as always, as is the character design. The story is... not ground-breaking. But Alice in Murderland started off with a fairly simple idea as well and then went batshit insane along the way (in a good way), so I still have a lot of hope.

Belle isn't unlikeable and I think Yuki portrayed her being a victim of abuse quite well. Cyril is kind of an ass, but I mean... that's the point. So good job. His design is a tiny bit weird? It looks like he's wearing a sky mask that someone glued teeth onto. Love his horns, though. Sorry, ears, I mean.

'Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost 1' with story and art by Kaori Yuki is a manga twist on a famous fairy tale.

Belle goes out to the woods with her mother to gather red flowers that will go with the unusual color of her hair. When she comes home alone, her dad locks her away for years in an act of cruelty. One day, years later, Belle escapes and flees to the woods. She is captured by the Beast and taken to his castle, but the humans that were enchanted there may be trying to kill their Prince in an act of vengeance.

This is a good dark take on the Beauty and the Beast story. I liked the twists along the way as well as the cruelty Belle learns to overcome along her journey. The art is pretty great too. The Beast design is really good.

I received a review copy of this manga from Kodansha and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.

I received an e-book copy of Beauty and the Beast of Paradise Lost Vol.1 through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have always liked the story of Beauty and the Beast, a bookwormish character and the concept of inner beauty…

I wasn't sure this would be comparable to The Ancient Magnus. Given how much I enjoyed that particular series.it was a really high bar to set.
But it did and I LOVED IT!

It is dark and sinister, and incredibly interesting.
To add to this wonderfully well done atmosphere, I found myself deeply enjoying how Kaori went about depicting the trauma and abuse that Belle went through and how this effects her. But how if you look under the tarnish you can see the shining person she was still there.

I WILL, be continuing this manga because the world is incredibly interesting, Belle has already captured my heart and also I have so many questions about how The Beast got into this situation.

This review will be for the whole series; read at your own risk!

Read 4 volumes

Promising start! This is more graphic (violence) than expected but it’s good! I think the premise is interesting and I’m definitely going to read on!

Edit 1/9/22: I really like it. We learn the history of the curse and who the villain is and how evil she is. I really like it!!

Edit 3/16/22: I think volume 5 will be the last one?? This is starting to wrap up and I’m really looking forward to see how it plays out! I love Beast and Belle!

CW: Death of a parent, Wishing death upon a child, Child abuse, Depression, Telling someone to unalive themselves

This volume took me completely by surprise. It is my first Kaori Yuki manga, and I desperately need to read more of their work!
In this story we follow Belle, a young girl with light purple hair who loses her mother to a beast. This beast then kidnaps her and she goes on a journey to find out what happened to her mother. I loved this so much! It was dark and the art was gorgeous. If you can handle the dark content and love fairy tale retellings, I would highly recommend this one.

Belle is a young girl with purple hair who is convinced a red rose from deep in the forest will help her strange purple locks be more appealing. Her mother follows and begs her not to go into the forest because of the terrible beast who lives there. As if she summons him, Belle's mother is abducted, and the Beast steals her beautiful face. The town burns the body in the hopes it will stop the Beast from coming back. Belle’s father can’t take the loss of his wife, so he shuts Belle up in their house and refuses to let anyone see her, while he spends the day drinking away the pennies she makes with her seamstress work. One day, Belle escapes and is determined to find her mother, who she believes is still alive in the Beast's castle. She finds the Beast, but he isn’t exactly how she remembers him. He’s rude, uncaring, but not murderous, and doesn’t steal her face. His magical floating castle brings her back to her village, but evil forces have been at work while Belle was away.

I really wanted to like this more then I did. Beast is kind of a douchebag and Belle is a little bit of an oxymoron. I am hoping it gets better because a horror spin on Beauty and the Beast is a cool idea.

I love the twist that Kaori Yuki brought to the retelling of Beauty and the Beast. The beast is an interesting character with his small quirks. I cannot wait for the rest of this series to see how it unfolds.
