Since I clearly wasn’t done traumatizing myself with Playground, I decided to immediately pick this one up to continue the trama train. I love a good anthology and this one definitely did not disappoint. I like that each of the stories was uniquely different from the last and there were even two stories that were kind of even heartwarming in a weird horror way.

Try the New Candy took a whole new meaning. In true Beauregard fashion, he writes the gritty underbelly of human nature. The deprave, not too far off of reality that is horror.

I try not to place spoilers, or give much away, in my reviews. So let’s glaze over a few of the shorties in this book.

Vending machine becomes filled with a new Candy, abused woman gets stranded after a fight with her abuser only to find herself in more danger, curiosity leads to a new display in a New Orleans’ museum. Just to highlight a few that really stuck with me.

Beauregard is just amazing at spinning these stories and has quickly become a must-read-everything he publishes author for me. Splatterpunk will never be the same.

Another week, another Aron Beauregard book. This is the 3rd one I've read in two weeks, having previously devoured the devious Wedding Day Massacre and the modern classic, Modern hysteria. I decided it was time to go back to the beginning, so I bought Try the New Candy.

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect with a short story collection. I love everything I've read from Beauregard, but I'm always skeptical of collections, the ability to write a great book doesn't necessarily mean that an author can write a good short story, nevermind an entire collection of them.

I needn't have worried, that's for sure. There are ten stories here and not a bad one in the bunch. When I review a collection, I like to highlight the standouts, in my opinion those were:

Try the New Candy
The Donor
House Sitting With Dad
Club Hell

Again, I loved this book, and all of the stories worked for me, some better than others. There is a nice range here. There is the gory, extreme stuff that most people probably know Aron for, but there is heart here, too. Stories with depth and meaning. There are a few in here that make you think, a few that make you sad. The range here is good.

Try the new candy is another book from Aron Beauregard that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm at the point where if he writes something, it's an instant buy.

This might be my favourite collection of Aron’s yet - and I’ve read almost all of them at this point! Every single story is a banger. And they’re all extremely messed up - minus Five O’Clock Shadow which is strangely beautiful for a Beauregard piece. You NEED to pick this collection up!

4.5 stars. My most disturbing read to date. Lots of gore, body horror and bodily fluids throughout these stories. Not for the faint hearted whatsoever.
