More mystery and more poison. It seems like Maomao’s expertise is in poison. She does well, especially in her deductions on the event. I was confused as to why

the lady-in-waiting for the Virtuous Consort (Consort Lishu) would switch the poisoned soup with Consort Gyushu’s. They’re all poisoned, that’s why the minister who didn’t believe Maomao’s deduction and drank a sip is sick.

The humor in this book good. I suspect

Jinshi is the emperor’s brother or of a high nobility or has some connection with Maomao- I gather this from the hairpin he wore and Maomao’s father’s comment on it being fate she’s in the Inner Palace.

Another great volume! I loved getting to see

Maomao go home and interact with her guardian, the brothels, and friends of hers

. I also adored the depictions of

Jinshi reacting to Maomao's homecoming

; it was just as funny in the manga as it was in the anime! I love seeing their relationship develop and grow. Definitely one of my favorite chunks of the story. Can't wait for the next volume!

This one was my favourite so far! I really liked getting out of the palace to Mao Mao’s home, getting more depth and understanding for her stony loner lifestyle. Jinshi’s behaviour in this manga was SO thirsty, he’s gonna need to chill. 

I feel super invested in the plot of this series so far - and the “who done it?” style with various weekly/monthly solvable (or not) cases are fun ways to build lore and relationships while we build that underlying story. Can’t wait to see where this goes to be honest.

This series continues to be engaging. The mystery elements work really well to increase tension while it's easy to care for and root for the main character.
