people who need a sequel to know paul isn’t a hero have zero brain cells to rub together

differences that i wanted to note:

book
  • better job of making paul’s impact on the fremen feel colonial and icky. the movie makes it feel like he’s truly a part of the tribe, but the book everything moves SO fast and it’s clear that paul and jessica don’t truly understand the fremen
  • even down to chani liking paul, there’s zero chemistry there it’s almost like she’s doing it on purpose to fulfill a prophecy
  • paul’s intentions are much more insidious and clear
  • paul being a mentat makes everything make way more sense
  • book RUSHED to a finish, but was notably more obvious in paul being a villain
movie
  • generally better pacing overall
  • chani not treating paul like the lisan al gaib gives her some agency and sews our doubt in paul
  • kept the baron creepy without being homophobic and stereotyping gay men as predators
  • the water of life is way more interesting and has higher stakes, like i wasn’t sure paul was gonna make it out of that except for i knew the ending

I first attempted to read this book in 2013 and failed miserably. I’ve found that I need to hear the words in my head as I read and the plethora of “alien” words made it slow, jarring reading. I waited almost a year in hold to check out the audio version and it was well worth the wait. I’m not sure if I’ll read any of the rest of the series, but I truly enjoyed the beginning.

¿A qué muertos?

—A los que todavía no están muertos —dijo él.

—Entonces deja que vivan sus vidas.”

Spennende, dystopisk, deterministisk opplegg. Kult å få innsikt i alle karakterenes tanker. Ikke så fan av slutten, det føltes som en litt for enkel seier. Hvor stor er egentlig denne føderasjonen av folk? Skal den ikke være veldig diger?

My favorite pure science fiction novel. Each re-reading confirms its greatness to my mind. The universe Herbert creates in Dune is second to none in speculative fiction and the story itself holds up incredibly well. While I love Asimov's Foundation series (even the prequel) and I'm quite fond of some of Heinlein's less popular novels, these books upon re-reading can feel dated both in scope and writing style. I don't feel this way about Dune. This time I decided to re-read Dune because a friend who works at the local coffee house mentioned how much he enjoyed it. It's probably been 15 years since I last read Dune. To cut to the chase, Dune holds up incredibly well. What I think I love most about it is the intricate plot that spans several worlds in the galaxy. And the character of Paul Atreides is always fascinating to me. Complex and compassionate, his creation is an interesting one to put in the center of all the political machinations going on around him. I usually stop with the first three books in the series, but this time around I may read all the Herbert penned novels in the series, through to number 6.
