I was given this book by an old colleague and was put off reading it for a long time because the cover of my version looked so awful - sappy woman and civil war paintings - and because, according to the back cover, the Daily Mail loved it. I was actually pleasantly surprised that it kept me gripped throughout.

This was my first Bernard Cornwell book. I don't think I will attempt another one.
Sadly I couldn't finish it. I found the characters one dimensional being either sickly sweet or downright evil with no in between.
The heroine was far too trusting and just plain daft, and the never ending dastardly deeds committed by the baddies just got tedious and boring.
I just had to give up this book in the end as it was annoying me.

I expected a little more romance from this book based on a recommendation from a friend, and was therefore a little disappointed. However, the book is a fun little action/mystery story with a little romance built in. If the synopsis interests you, I would highly recommend it.

Surprisingly sweet and engaging. Not the best, but certainly kept my attention. And found myself disappointed that the sequel is 100+ years later ..

Foi o primeiro livro que li sobre ambientado na Guerra Civil inglesa. Alguns pormenores são interessantes, mas globalmente é um vulgar livro de aventuras, previsível mas empolgante.
