i enjoyed—can i even say this about a book like “la tregua”?—this even more than “se questo è un uomo”, which i wasn't actually anticipating. it's kind of insane to me that, at my big age, i didn't even know primo levi ended up making a trilogy out of this. the italian school system failed me. /hj
for this and so many more reasons, i am so glad i finally got to add this to my bag of knowledge. “la tregua” was such an interesting experience, and i mean this in the nicest way possible. it's just that, for better or worse, such way of living is so far removed from modern society that i feel like it's pivotal to learn about what primo levi and so many others like him really went through—not only during their time as prisoners, something we surely know a little bit more about, but also after. i can never thank primo levi enough, i think, for leaving us with such testimony of his tragic journey—for deeming that it was worth to share everything that happened before, during and after, and the way everything affected him and so many others.
i can't wait to catch with “i sommersi e i salvati” as well, in order to finally get the full picture.

La tregua mi ha colpito più di Se questo è un uomo: mentre i personaggi di quest'ultimo sono i "sommersi" della storia, morti a migliaia e migliaia nella brutalità dei Lager nazisti, quelli de La tregua sono i "salvati", sono quelli che sono rimasti e che devono cercare di ritrovare la propria umanità perduta dopo la tragedia. L'ambiente che troviamo nel libro non è sicuramente un ambiente allegro, ma Levi attraverso il suo stile sobrio e pacato riesce a mettere in evidenza le assurdità quasi comiche dei personaggi che incontra così come la devastazione generale tutt'intorno. Dopo l'Iliade della guerra, l'Odissea del ritorno a casa, non meno traumatica: un viaggio di quasi dieci mesi da Auschwitz, poi in Ucraina, Bielorussia, Moldavia, Romania, Ungheria, Slovacchia, Austria, Germania e infine Italia, attraverso cui Levi assiste all'esodo dei civili colpiti e dell'Armata Rossa dopo il disarmo. Durante tutto il viaggio Levi, come sopravvissuto, non può dimenticarsi di quello che ha subito: la tragedia del Lager permea sempre, come un fantasma silenzioso, i suoi pensieri, e di questo fantasma non si può in alcun modo liberare; perché dopo la guerra non è mai pace definitiva, è tregua, è pace che va costruita ascoltando chi è sopravvissuto agli scempi da essa creati e non rifacendo gli stessi errori del passato.

Negribēju lasīt šobrīd ar Holokaustu saistītu literatūru, bet nonācu tādā situācijā, ka jālasa. Nenožēloju. Ja par grāmatu var katru nedēļu 2-3h sarunāties ar foršiem cilvēkiem, tad no katras var paņemt TIK daudz. Bez sarunām droši vien daudz palaistu garām. Tagad neapšaubāmi 5/5. Un kā Džords Stainers šā mēneša Rīgas Laikā saka par holokausta aprakstītājiem: "Primo Levi ir vis, vis, vispārākais".
