Again, another amazing book in the part of this series. Though there is no real 'assassin' work, there is political scheming and magic up the wazoo.

I love the way Robin Hobb writes. Her character development is something I treasure while reading these books. I also love how she starts each chapter out on some sort of backstory or explanation on something that has happened off screen, that is not focusing on Fitz, at the beginning of each chapter.

I can't wait to start book three. Though I am told that is the weakest of the three books. But I gotta finish it!

The worldbuilding, characters and complex plot are only improved in this book from the first. Hobb weaves in the history from previous book so well in this one. It doesn't feel like an info dump but also doesn't leave out important information you may have forgotten.

My gripe with it is how much darker it is. The first already had a lack of agency for Fifz but in this book he also faces what feels like a hopeless situation. With every action he takes, things always seem to worsen which is disheartening. I also disliked the entire Molly plotline.

The writing and story are good but I had a tougher time enjoying this.

An immediate improvement from the last installment. Although this one is slowly paced, the intricate plot captivated me the whole way through. Conversations, plots, and even a few battles were enough to convince me that this is one of the strongest series I have read in some time.

Took forever.
Narrator has the weirdest accent I've ever heard.
The whole Molly plotline can f off.
Knowing the war is hopeless kinda makes one not want to slog through 1000 pages of despair and loss.
