“Heroes shouldn’t be stupid for the villain to be smart”
This was the exact quote going through my mind reading this book. Everyone, from Fitz to Chade to Molly were so stupid, even Verity! Regal is cartoonishly evil and yet everyone did nothing about it, but spent the entire book complaining about it? That made so sense and using “we’re doing this for the king” was extremely flimsy. Every decision Fitz made from the beginning of the book to the end kept getting dumber and dumber. By the end I did not care. I literally said out loud, "good you deserve it! You deserve every bad thing happening to you because you're dumb!" I even thought you know, Regal is an idiot, but these people are even stupider than he is, let him be king cause no one else is going to stop him. Fuck the king, by the way, I don’t care about Shrewd. The More Fitz kept calling himself a Kingsman, the angrier I got.
I don’t know what happened from the first book, but it went downhill so fast. This is 679 pages. 679 pages too long. Almost 500 of it was just filler and served no purpose to the plot. It was long, it was frustrating, and I did not enjoy it. I’m really saddened because I really liked the first one and I was hoping that energy would be in the second book since Fitz is older, but that did not transfer at all. Fitz spends the majority of this book whining, complaining, doing literally nothing, and then crying more about it. You’re a trained assassin, Chade is an assassin, but no one can do anything to stop Regal? I find that hard to believe.
Unfortunately I don’t recommend this book.

8.6/10 - Great
A great sequel to continue the journey of FitzChivalry, though I would place it below Book 1. The things that remain great about Hobbs are her fantastic characterization, prose that keeps you engaged even when the plot isn't dynamically changing, and plot twists with loved characters that hit hard. At a hundred thousand words more than Book 1, however, it doesn't feel like significantly more happened. It was an even slower burn, and while I never felt disengaged due to Hobbs' writing, I did finish reading the book, thinking back and saying "Is that really all that happened?" The conclusion is once again stellar, with plot twists I didn't anticipate, though the overarcing problem to me remained everyone-but-Fitz' refusal to see just how traitorous and evil Regal is. The signs are all there, it's plain-faced, and Fitz tries to explain as much but he's always rebuked as coming too close to treason or worrying about things he doesn't understand. Still, these are relatively minor complaints compared to what was another very enjoyable story in an immersive world with fantastic characters and magic. A treat of the fantasy genre.

This book was beautiful. The writing and the characters and everything just felt so immersive. definitely a big step up from the prior book in terms of plot. Hobb still has the amazing ability of creating some of the most insufferable and hateable characters I’ve ever encountered. But with the main characters, there’s so much humanity.
more magic in this one too.

good book, needs a good chunk cut out (probably like 75% of the moaning about Molly)
Also could do away with all the sex sharing lmao

No, no creo...

How does Hobb make her writing feel effortless? There is a distinct tempo to these books and Fitz's monologue that at 700-something pages and two books should feel stale but instead keeps carrying you on.
Also, I would like to send my therapy bill directly to Hobb for Vixen and the first Cub scenes. Thanks.

enjoyable and intriguing. loved the addition of nighteyes, and also loved kettricken in this book. i feel so bad for fitz and wonder whether he will ever get a break.
pulled down by how slow the pace is sometimes, and also how frustrating some of the characters (mostly molly and fitz) can be.
this is definitely different than any other fantasy ive read, and still looking forward to book 3.
