Incredibly edgy in a way that I could not even begin to enjoy.

The language is a beating, serving no purpose other than ... no, just no purpose.
The characters aren't characters, and the story is no story. Borders on tone poem territory, in prose.
A slog all around.

This is an incredible book in that you don't find many of these very often. Definitely for those who enjoy works that are more cerebral than logical. Reading it was more like this: she creates an image in your mind and just as you feel you begin to understand it morphs, like you're trying hard to comprehend a shapeshifting god. It takes a lot of mental effort but I found that thrilling. Also, something I don't see mentioned much in these reviews is the brutal emotional honesty of this confused character. I often read books where I'm watching a character do thing but in this case I feel like I became her for a while. That's not an easy trick. And even if this book feel like a literary stunt, I have to hand it to Krilanovich for not pulling her punches and really, fiercely following her vision.
I've seen a few people say it works even better the second go-around. I'm looking forward to that.

I just cannot get over the edge lord style writing. I like outsider fiction and I like gritty horror but I like it when it’s done well:

Dear lord, I finally made it through this book. First moral of this story is don't believe the hype. I think I picked up on this book through a couple of short articles on it saying how it was a new take on the vampire genre and comparing it W.S. Burroughs. But having waded my way through this garbage, I feel like the book should have been titled 'The author throws up words on a page', and also any reviewer that compares with Burroughs is either doing Burroughs a huge disservice or has really never read any. It is rare that I can't find anything redeeming to say about a book, but with this one I honestly can't. You know that oft used statistical analogy of 100 monkeys in a rooms with typewriters and at some point one of them has to come up with the manuscript for Hamlet, well this feels like the random discarded pages of the other 99 monkeys on any given day in that experiment. Can I have my money back.
