damn. did not think a biography of a group of philosophers would make me CRY. I got so unexpectedly emotional during that last chapter about the ends of their lives :(( this book is phenomenal (ha) and I wish I had read it two years ago when I was hopelessly lost in a twentieth-century philosophy of dissent class.

This felt like a long philosophy class and I loved every second of it.

I have to admit that after listening to this audiobook I'm still a bit confused about what exactly existentialism is. And yet I give it 5 stars. This book is about the people behind the existentialist and phenomenology movements in the mid-20th Century. The author gives real insights into their personalities, struggles and weaknesses and she interweaves her impressions from her youth with her rereading of these philosophers today to humorous effect. Really it was a fun audiobook to listen to even though much of the actual philosophy went over my head. There are even a couple of books that were discussed that I'm going to try to read. I loved The Stranger when I was 16 after all. Wonder what I would think of it today...

Ps. The narrator of the audio version, Antonia Beamish, was excellent. Her French and German accents were impeccable and her American impression was quite funny. She made the difficult subject matter easier to listen to with her inflection and pauses. Really well done.

A simply remarkable book. Some parts intellectual history, some parts biography, and a touch of memoir, I loved this book. The reader understands people like Sartre, Beauvoir, Heidegger, Husserl, Merlau-Ponty, Camus, Jaspers and more in the context of war, friendship, conflict. Just so good.
