When an Irish woman is murdered shortly after giving birth there is no shortage of suspects within the Italian family she has married into. The Irish and Italians have no love for one another in this time period. They are competing for the same jobs in New York's lower east side, and culturally, while both may be Catholic, they are totally different. Will Sarah Brandt, the midwife who delivered the woman's baby, and Frank Malloy, the police detective, be able to solve this murder, as well as the victim's mother's murder, before the Irish and Italians cause any more riots or the Black Hand takes justice into its hands?

Audiobook (All of my entries on The Story Graph are audiobooks.)
#8 in series (I started reading this series on 2/6/22 and I have been committed to this series since 6/17/22.)
Comparison to others in series:Not as good About the same Better A good edition and addition to the series. From the opening chapter I was pretty sure about the how and why of the murders.
The narrator was Callie Beaulieu. I love her as always.

Another audiobook. If I read this, I wouldn't have heard these Italian accents. I cannot tell if the accents are good or bad. It kinda took me out of it.
In terms of the story, I thought it was interesting. Sarah is back doing midwifery in Little Italy. The mother-to-be is a young Irish lass who married an equally young Italian boy. Their 'courtship' was quick, so Sarah was expecting a premature baby, but it is NOT! it's a big full-term baby! Soon, murders happen.
But why? And by whom?
Roosevelt shows up. Malloy is again annoyed. There's some race riots between Italians and Irish folks.
Again, the descriptions of the tenements and the work that people had to do to make a living. I really like the series and can't wait to see what happens with Sarah and Frank.
