Interesting, enjoyable story but I think the narrator went a bit overboard and made everyone sound monotone at one time or another.

What if the echoes of every word ever spoken in a room are continuing to bounce off the walls of that room? What if, with the power of sensitive microphones and super-computers, you could recreate those sounds? And what if there was a government program that exploited super-smart autistic children for their powers?

The Speed of Sound explores a ton of really fascinating questions and does so with great insight and pacing.

The characters are fun, believable and have great development throughout. The villains have obvious motivators driving their decision-making processes. And the writing is crisp (if not, in itself, all that innovative).

Great summer read, warmly recommended.

Got this through Amazon Prime Kindle First Reads. As someone else has mentioned, it reads like a movie. Lots of good characters, plot twists, cover up assassinations and the like. I think Bernt got the character of Eddie Parks down pretty well. Skylar was kind of sterotypical.

I did not like that this was not a one off. I felt there should have been an end, with the technology being permanently disabled by Eddie after he gets what he needs from it. But we'll see what the next installment brings.

3.5 stars for pure enjoyment

It didn't surprise me to learn that the author of this book is also a screenwriter, because I found the book very cinematic. It's also a great book to read when you're looking for something with relentless pacing. I enjoyed the characters and particularly liked reading about Eddie. To me, it's always a plus when a book gets away at least a little from conventional characters. All in all, I thought the characters were pretty nicely done, though this was definitely more of a beach read/page turner. It kept me entertained, though, and it was a nice break from my current reading slump. I'll be reading the next book in the series.

Wow!

What a wonderful read! It was enthralling from the beginning, and really presented the science in a thoughtful way that made the whole story believable. I couldn't put it down and am really excited to read the next one!

This book was amazing!!! I couldn't stop reading it, and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I'm so glad I chose it as my free one for the month! I'm an Amazon Prime member, so I get one free pre-release book each month. Before I read the description, I had trouble choosing between this book and one other, but once I read that, I knew I had to get this one. I love science fiction and thrillers. Also, I'm autistic, and I like books with autistic characters. In so many ways, I could identify with Eddie. I understood how he felt and many of his behaviors. I know how it is to practice showing emotions and responding the right way to things, and to not understand expressions. I also understood Skylar's desire to protect him. I kept cheering them on, hoping they could stay safe an keep the echo box out of the wrong hands. Some of the characters were so cruel and cold, and I didn't want them to hurt Eddie or Skylar, or get the echo box. Also, the science behind the echo box really interested me. I have sensitive hearing. I don't know that it's as sensitive as Eddie's, but I can relate to him because of it. Some of the things that happened to Eddie an Skylar made me cry, and I really cried at the end. If you're interested in science fiction, thrillers, or autism, I highly recommend this book! It looks like it's the first in a series, so I'll be following this author and watching for the next book!

Quite a fun page turner of a thriller. An easy read and fairly lightweight

Really uncomfortable with the way people with autism are portrayed. Savants drooling in an institution is all I've read so far.
