The Honourable Miss Phyrne Fisher goes undercover at a circus to solve a run of bad luck the performers are having. As usual she uncovers much more!

The narrator for this was excellent which helped! This was an easy to listen to, interesting audio book

A fun one. I had my worries about a book from the 90s dealing with so many minority groupings, but aside from some period-appropriate terms it was handled pretty respectfully.

Phryne is bored and the opportunity presents itself for her to join the circus in the hope of finding out why there are so many unfortunate events and accidents. An interesting premise for a story but it splits into two directions, one following Phryne at the circus and the other following the police investigation of a murder, lead by Jack Robinson. Of course the two story lines merge at the end. In between, there is mass confusion.

The story lines lack true rhyme and reason and all the carrying on about joining a circus was just not believable. She was not running away from society because of some unforgivable event, she was doing this for a reason, she was going undercover. Everything was strangely dragged out and unnecessarily so.

I found it hard to enjoy this story.

I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying that I appreciate finally getting a glimpse of some human weakness in Phryne, and I don't mean her weakness for pretty young men. In all of the books, Phryne is just perfect and capable of everything and it made it difficult to really like her. In this book, however, seeing a moment of fragility made her infinitely more likable since it showed that she is not just another Mary Sue (which, to be honest, she is).
