I loved this book. Unflinching and so relatable, really captures the humanity and internal conflicts of the main characters so well.

I loved this book but it took a while to start it. It starts off immediately introducing us to several character. So I was trying to remember those details and then it jumps scenes rapid fire to multiple different girls and their POVs. I’ve DNFd books that introduce lots of characters right away making it hard to remember things and just feeling overwhelming. I did pause and consider stopping it. I restarted the audiobook several times to try and commit all these scenes into the storytelling. I eventually went to the written book to help pace me and see the details vs listening to them. This helped get me going. I’m glad I did because it was a really good and important book.
That said, as the book went on those scenes kept happening but it made more sense in the grand scheme of things. They even tied into some characters that we’d met which loops back to my feeling like I had to remember all these scene blurbs. That said I still think it still bogged down the book especially as we do meet more and more and more characters and we still follow the three main characters’ POVs. Its a lot it ask your audience to read an emotionally heavy book while asking them to remember an incredible amount of details and additional characters. I think it would have flowed better without those scenes and it’s the main reason it’s a 4 vs a 5 for me.

Though I didn't love the end, I loved the raw realism of the issues young women face with sexuality: double-standards, "boys will be boys," slut-shaming culture, and more. This was a very relevant addition to what has become a growing genre of young adult sexual assault fiction.

Erin-
She has work to do. This is no time for being underwater. This is no time for being mad at her best friend. Some things are just too big to be afraid of.
Rosina-
Erin is right, Rosina thinks. She is not the real Rosina. She is someone who needs a home more than she wants to help people. She is not brave. She is not a hero. She is scared. She is so fucking scared.
Grace-
“I can explain,” Grace says. She pauses for a moment, closes her eyes, searches inside herself for the solid part of her, the place her true voice comes from. “I am one of the founders of the Nowhere Girls.”
Us-
The sound is deafening, primal. It is every feeling, all at once. It is all the girls, all their voices, calling out as loud as they can. They burn through darkness. They brand the night.
This book took me on a wild ride joining forces with the girls to rebel against the boys and their oppressed act that had been going on for too long. It opened up with three girls, Grace, Rosina, and Erin. Their lives all different but as they met and formed friendships.. they realized how they had to do this. This book is a strong feminism story about the girls in a high school standing up for what they believe in. I was so immersed and I loved every minute reading this one. I’m a feminist myself and there were some moments that I felt the urge to yell out, “OH YES! OH YES! YOU GO, GIRLS!! SHOW THEM!!” This book was beautiful. The author didn’t bury the truth. She showed it opened in the public for everyone to see. The brutal truth about our world we live in. Rape is a thing that happen too commonly everywhere. It never should be. This book teaches us about how you have voice. Everyone does. Say no. You have your own right to your own body.
I can’t express my love for this book. Just, just go and read it!!
