I really was expecting to love this (I've heard great things about The Hidden Life of Trees) and the premise seems right up my alley, but I found it hard to enjoy.

The euro-centrism is a little frustrating, though I feel I shouldn't be mad since it was published in German.

Mostly, I felt the book lacked focus and organization. The chapters went from super general, cosmos-level tidbits, into the minutae of caring for your garden (seriously, did it occur to the author that we can be interseted in weather without being gardeners?).

I think if my expectations were lower I would have given it 3 stars, but it almost became a DNF.

This book has zero practical relevance to my life since I neither live in central Europe nor tend a garden, but I like the author. Also, it's need that you can use an analog watch as a compass based on the sun's position, so that was fun to learn.

3 stars for writing. 2 stars for material. The first half was fascinating with lots of fun weather prediction facts. However it quickly turned into a gardening book with no mentions of weather the second half.

My biggest qualm with this book is the misleading title! The first few chapters discuss the weather. Beyond that, it's predominantly a gardening book! Being a gardener, myself, and a lover of the natural world in general, I don't have a problem with this twist. But, the title should have been something to the effect of "Reawakening Our Powers of Observation: Rediscovering Nature's Hidden Signs." If you liked this book at all, you MUST read The Hidden Life of Trees! It's incredible.

Another book I started, was enjoying, but didn’t finish because I lacked focus. The information was interesting, and this would make a good spring read while getting excited for the gardening season. The language is very accessible, except there’s a lot of temperature talk and it’s all in Fahrenheit and my country does Celsius which meant I couldn’t really follow those discussions, which was both annoying and unfortunate.

'The Weather Detective' by Peter Wohlleben with English translation by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp is the third book by the author. It's also continuing in the vein of his other works.

In this work, the author seems to want us to slow down a bit and look and listen around us. The weather can be seen in the signs in our gardens, and how the critters who inhabit our yards are acting. How plants can survive in global warming, how much water is enough for plants, and what creatures we should allow in our yards are also discussed. The cycle of seasons, and the moon, and a typical day are opined on.

It's a short work, and only the first third is about the weather. I was hoping there might be a bit more content on the subject, but I still found myself liking the work. It's a book to read and relax with. A book to read outside as you listen to the wind and the birds.

I received a review copy of this book from Dutton-Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this book.
