It is still amazing that [a:Jeff Lindsay|10482|Jeff Lindsay|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1198012537p2/10482.jpg] is able to give character growth opportunities to a serial killer. The new character additions and the kids growing up enriches the Dexter experience. Different than the TV version and that's OK.

This was a book of two First half was Deb bitching and moaning with Dexter being a daddy. Boring and had to put the book aside for a while. The second half was Dexterish.

Well, it was a long time ago since I last read a Dexter-book and again I realized why I love the series so much more. It's just more complex, more exciting, more interesting.
The stories in the books are good, too, but I'm not that eager to read the next book, but I'm dying to see the next season on TV. Weird.

I should not be liking these as much as I am, but I feel like each one is more enjoyable than the last. I do think part of that is me accepting the series for what it is. It's not good. It's not particularly well written. It's fun.

The vampire cannibal cult is so campy but it works. Dexter takes wayyy too longer to realize Brian is the person cutting up bodies though. I half wish that was more hidden, but was also very excited to know he'd show up at the end lol

So I was actually surprised with this one. I’ve stated before that I enjoy Lindsay’s prose, and as such I’m able to rattle through these books fairly quickly.
The story is full of it’s usual plot holes and conveniences, and while my eyes roll hard I’m able to suspend my disbelief long enough.
Let me briefly address criticisms I’ve seen: this is a book about a serial killer who works for the police, drugs, sociopaths, murder, and cannibals. There are certain tropes that exist both in fact and fiction that are inescapable. And that’s all I’ll say on the matter.
The plot is typically campy and over the top as seems to be a theme with the books, and of course in that respect you want a big, spectacular finale no matter how incredulous it might be. In that respect it delivers, even if it is silly.
I did however, enjoy Samantha’s mind set, just to add a little twist into proceedings. I felt like that added much more to the story and my enjoyment.
I do like how Dexter is now facing an inner struggle more than usual, and how his motivations are starting to shift, something that is explored much better than in the show.
All in all, an improvement, and as the longest book in the series so far, that’s a Very Good Thing™️

I wanted to see the ending! It didn't really feel finished. :(

Great artwork, fun set-up, but it definitely felt incomplete, although you could argue that that was the ending. I wanted the final battle, etc. Maybe there's another issue that I missed?

Fun read. I like that the artwork shadowed the appearances of the character from the show, but didn't duplicate it.

I'm a sucker for these Dexter/serial killer story-lines.

Disturbing case with this one. But a good continuation of the Dexter series!
