This book really grew on me! There’s very little plot but plenty of tension and it still feels like things are happening even though the characters are all stuck in one place. The characters are unique and the perspectives make up a microcosm of the intergalactic society Becky Chambers has created. It’s a slow, gentle build full of heart. Tentative interactions grow into alliances and supportive friendships. Overall, it creates a really poignant and beautiful atmosphere that lingers after reading!
I have the beautiful hardback copy and I love that the artwork matches an image created in the final moments of the book. When I figured that out I felt a little tearful!

A little bit slow to start, but builds into a touching and fun and though-provoking look into how we interact with one another. I really liked that there were no human characters. Chambers is a master.

I love this series. Recommended for anyone with an interest in sci-fi who wants to see what sci-fi is when it's not written by old white men. These are light-hearted and easy, enjoyable books with interesting characters and plots. The second book is still my favorite but I will continue to look forward to and read these as they come out.

As with the previous book in the series (Record of a Spaceborn Few), there are some interesting relationships and issues touched on, but ultimately the book feels more like the author's worldbuilding notes than anything else.
