The ending was not my favorite, but I think it is still a fantastic book. I will read again.

When I first heard of this book I wasn’t sure it would be for me. A story set in 1937 in Kentucky about 4 women delivering a travelling library. Boy was I mistaken! It was beautifully written and took me to a different time and world, with incredible characters and a wonderful story! One of my faves

Despite this story being inspired by the same historical era as was "The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek", I disagree with the accusation of plagiarism. I found the 2 stories to be quite different from each other, with Moyes producing a more engaging and emotional tale.

As a novelist myself, I firmly believe that multiple authors can write about a common time period or historical event without "stealing" each others' ideas. Read both excellent books and decide for yourself.

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically.

The leader, and soon Alice’s greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who’s never asked a man’s permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the WPA Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them—and to the men they love—becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty, justice, humanity, and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others brutal, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any, arming them with facts that will change their lives.

Based on a true story rooted in America’s past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking, enthralling, it is destined to become a modern classic—a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond.

I was in love with this book. I was a small-town librarian in another life and it was so refreshing to read this story and about the women that pioneered the Packhorse Librarians. I feel in love with the characters, the library, and the townspeople. It is an amazing story and a great read.

This was excellent. I love books about women working together and sticking it to the man haha.

P.S. I’m glad I read The Book Woman first (also about the pack horse librarian program) because it was good but this one is much better.
