I enjoyed it quite a bit, and more than I actually expected to! The last two stories I’d read previously, In The Tall Grass I read on its own, and You Are Released I read in Flight or Fright, so I didn’t reread those. Here’s my order from best to worst:
You Are Released
All I Care About Is You
Late Returns
Faun
In The Tall Grass
Throttle
Twittering from the Circus of the Dead
Dark Carousel
Mums
By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain
Thumbprint
Wolverton Station
The Devil on the Staircase

Oh boy

When I started reading this book it was more of an oooooo spoooooky feeling, nothing too deep and just enjoyable enough that I could keep reading (it felt like taking bites out of a large sandwich) without taking a break.

I adored Late Returns. In Joe Hill's acknowledgement about 'All I Care About Is You' (which, the story by the way, broke my heart a little bit. I pictured Connor from Detroit: BH whom I love and it hurt) he says "One of these days, I'll learn how to write a story with a happy ending." Late Returns was damn close to that, at least for me. As someone who adores pop up libraries and what they can mean to people, this gem was smack dab in the middle of a bunch of horror and I loved it. So much. If I could own just a copy of Late Returns I would.

The later half of this anthology. Oh lord. If the beginning of this book had me humming along, the end of it hit me like a truck. I white knuckled my kindle. I'd already watched In the tall grass and was definitely expecting something more along the lines of the movie. Spoiler alert. It was not like the movie. But it packed a punch.

Honestly great job with this. I loved it.

The apple doesn't...you know the rest.

The stories were great, but I really enjoyed reading about Joe's struggle to become a writer and his decision to embrace the type of stories his dad writes. He has his own voice, but you can hear his dad in his writing. I enjoyed each of the stories a lot. It's in his blood!

I'll always read Joe Hill and love his weird ideas.

My favourites of this compilation of short stories are Dark Carousel, Late Returns, and You Are Released. I also love the narrators brought on for this project, including Hill himself.

You Are Released is hitting me hardest right now. I don't think I would have connected with it as much in October, when I started reading this. It's weird how literature finds you when you need it most.

A couple of the stories were good, but I couldn’t get into most of them

Read the first half of this book in December 2019. Some stories were beyond brilliant..some lagged.
