I'll be discussing this with my book group at the end of this week. After that I may feel differently about this book. I admire Rushdie's writing ability; I'm just not sure I like it.

Five stars! Five big fat stars for Midnight's Children, which sat unread on my shelf for upwards of a decade, intimidating me with its length, its density, the seeming impenetrability of its prose. It needn't have intimidated me that much because making my way though this big, busy book is the most fun I've had reading a novel in a long time.

Thought this might be a five star read, but the more I neared the end, the more exasperated I was with the writing and how self-indulgent and self-referential it was. It begins to grate on you about 100 pages before the end. Salman Rushdie is a good writer and he knows it, but god I wish he had been a little bit less aware of it writing this book. A really complex, accomplished novel, but I found it overstayed its welcome and was, to me, less effective for it. I'm glad to have read it and I'm glad to be done with it and I do not foresee a reread in my future.
