I really enjoyed this book and how it normalizes families/unions of all kinds in such a standard suspense format. I heard the recommendation on NPR and am very glad that I took their advice!

Awesome read.

Just feels like she got so much texture into the novel. The relationships especially, whether they be with her partner, her co-workers, her neighbors, or the criminals she encounters all read (to me) as spot on.

The setting (Texas), with all it entails for a woman in a relationship with another woman, also seems realistic. But then again - how the hell would I know, being a male from New York.

Read this on a road trip - in the car both ways - and was unable to put it down for any length of time.

I liked this book and I had issues with it at the same time. It took me longer to get through it as I thought some areas seemed inconsequential and others I wish I knew how things developed to that point as it seemed like I missed something and maybe I did. What I liked is the main character and would like to see where she goes so will probably read the next one.

A fairly competent police procedural, but one that never really grabbed hold of me. It is great when our hero can be a lesbian detective, less great when the lesbianism is referenced so much that it ends up defining her. It is an important step to accept people’s sexual preference. A more important step will be when we stop seeing that sexual preference as their prime essential characteristic. It's the difference between someone being a lesbian detective and someone being a detective who happens to be a lesbian. Fairly good read.

I enjoyed the character of Betty and will definitely continue reading the series. But readers should note that this book is rough - trigger warnings for sexual assault and torture- with a few graphic descriptions.
