Wonderful companion to Pet.
Once again, I note that the audio book was fantastic.

This was okay. I’m not typically a YA reader, so maybe it just wasn’t written for me. I did enjoy the first half. I liked hearing about Bitter’s daily life, her mental health, her social circle, her political views—the mundane made intriguing with a sprinkle of magical realism.
But the second half felt entirely unconvincing to me. Emezi's preaching leaves no room for the reader to develop their own conclusions about politics, violence, and morality. The way the story ends, all wrapped up in a neat little bow, does little justice to the issues we are introduced to in the first half. Overall, I think the character work was well done, but the world-building left a lot to be desired (considering how important Lucille is as the setting for this novel, I’m disappointed to have reached the end without any idea of what the city actually looks like). Also, I have never before read a book that screams "this author spent way too much time on TikTok in 2020" (but no judgment there; takes one to know one).
