Thriller. Forensic investigation into bodies found in containers in the US. Bad language, far-fetch story.

I listened to this book over a day and a half, and of course I was enthralled, as I have been since I picked up Deja Dead!!

Tempe is back to solving cold cases in Montreal, Quebec, and Charleston, SC, with the help of her Canadian love, Detective Andrew Ryan. I do love retired Detective Ryan!! He and Tempe have a long history, some good, some bad, but he always brings the added sarcasm and dry humor. Not that Tempe is short on the sarcasm and snark! Gotta love that. But in this edition, they are back at it on a case they couldn’t close fifteen years before. Tempe travels back and forth between the two cities, along with Memphis, while trying to solve multiple cases at once.

I was a little disappointed in a couple spots when there was some unintentional body shaming, just by the descriptions of a couple characters. Also there was some terms that have been used for years but are actually appropriation from cultures that both US and Canadian governments have been committing genocide against for centuries. But we live, and hopefully we learn. These issues were very small in comparison, and did not detract from the plot. I did zone out a little during the science lessons, but truthfully I think in the climate of anti-vaccine rhetoric right now, the science lessons were hopefully helpful to those that are having problems understanding why Covid vaccines are so important. (I’m immunocompromised and have several underlying conditions, so these vaccines are extremely important to me!!)

Overall, I’d give The Bone Code 9/10.

I won a copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaways and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’ve read many of Reichs’ Temperance Brennan books, but fell away from them around 10 years ago—there are so many, my life was busy, and I just fell behind. Entering back into Brennan’s world is easy, like slipping on an old coat, and I’m reminded of why this series both works and doesn’t. The books read fast, and are plotted well. They give just enough science to make you feel smart but not enough to be overwhelming, and they’re generally rooted in current events. Tempe is a pretty good main character; she’s smart without being a know-it-all, she’s brave and strong, sometimes to a fault, and she’s realistically faulted.

The bad: the books always rely on a series of wild coincidences that somehow only Tempe can make fall into place. There’s nearly always some physical danger that is so unlikely and miraculously always works out for the best.

This particular book centers on CRISPR, mRNA and a rapidly spreading disease. There’s murder and mayhem, cold cases, media panic, the whole works. It’s a good read, and is ideal for planes or the beach.

An enjoyable story… maybe hits a bit to close to home based on COVID-19 and it’s associated vaccines… but otherwise a good story.

(I finally won a Goodreads giveaway!)
This is a worthy addition to the series, and I'm so glad Kathy Reichs is (able to be) back.
Plenty of twists and turns. Just enough OMG/Tabarnac! evil. Quintessential Tempe (a character I love, and not JUST bc of how much I envy her dual jobs in Montréal and NC ;) ).

I absolutely love this series! So surprised we are already on number twenty but this one hits so close to home. I live in Aiken County which is where part of this story takes place in South Carolina. I also grew up off the St. Lawrence River in New York and love Montreal and Quebec equally. I also love to see the Canadian references and it brings me a ton of nostalgia.

What did I like? All I have to hear is the author’s name and I want to read it. I was a fan of the author before I knew the tv series Bones. This involves a cold case and a new case brought to shore by a hurricane. Temperance connects the cases because she caught the first case years ago. I loved how everything tied together in the end.

Would I recommend or buy? I’d recommend the whole series. Tempe has been through so many horrors given her job but the stories are puzzling and love how they’re solved. I’ve bought quite a few of this authors books! If you like medical thrillers then this is one of the best! Five huge stars. I will definitely read more by this author!

I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review. One of my favorite series!
