This books is a quick and easy listen, jam packed with good advice. Examples, scripts, mantras to make things easy to remember ("your kindness if your credential"). I highly recommend it for anyone and everyone who has ever found themselves at a loss of what to say/do but desperately wanting to say/do *something*. It covers common pitfalls and what to do instead.
4 stars instead of 5 only because I have experience with a few of the hard things they mention in the book and while most the scripts/suggestions were good, there were some that still made me roll my eyes. That said, their proffered suggestions were still better than the comment they were replacing, so I would happily endorse everything they wrote on that merit alone.

I listened to the audiobook and followed along in the hardback to take notes.
Had a strong start (first 3 chapters are great) and a mediocre finish. Worth reading, but nothing groundbreaking. The layout of the book is strange and distracting.

this was not what i was originally expecting, which was a book with cute drawings and illustrations and a list of "things to say".
heeeeeeell no - this ended up being an extremely in-depth book about compassion and kindness.
unfortunately, 1/3rd of the way in, i had to return this to the library, but will be checking it out in the future to read it more thoroughly. i didn't have time to read this, as i'd checked it out during the three month period that my husband lost both his mother and his father. we're still coping and it's fascinating to me to see who has reached out, who has responded in the worst ways, and who hasn't responded at all.

I echo all the other reviews that say this should be required reading for humans. It has great tips on how to show up for people even if you don't have time. Caring is what matters.

I never had a good model for how to support others, especially during hard times. This book changed my life. I wish someone had gifted me a copy when I was 18 before all the adult problems started falling around people I love.
