Pressing forward with the adventures of werewolf opposites and honeymoon pair, Charles and Anna the Alpha and Omega wolves, I put in my earplugs and enjoyed this venture into supernatural intrigue and werewolf politics among the wolves, fae, witches, and vampires of Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson world.

Like with Cry Wolf, I was deeply engaged with the slow burn and slow build of Charles and Anna's unique relationship both as a couple and as a working team. There is mutual respect and love for each other, but both stumble and get in their own way because of their pasts. Plus, both are learning just what an omega wolf is and can do.

All this takes place while they meet with a large European delegation of werewolves to discuss and help transition them for Bran's big announcement that the wolves are coming out to the human public. Unfortunately, this is fraught with all sorts of dangerous pitfalls because there are some very powerful wolves among the delegations who have their own agendas. One in particular is know as the Beast for a reason.

Meanwhile, Anna is the target of someone, a powerful fae may or not be trusted, a group of vampires are loose in Seattle, and a Beast wants to go hunting. Is it to do with the meetings? her omega status? to get to Charles? They must figure out who is behind the attempted attacks before its too late.

Holter Graham does fabulous telling Hunting Grounds and I look forward to more of his work in the next series installment.

Brilliant urban fantasy!

May 2023: I read the last few books in the two series in order but my reading dates for the earlier books are wildly different. So it's particular interesting to finally read the MercyVerse in correct order. I didn't love this story as much as the first two, but I adored Anna and Charles. And it's all about them!

Re-read 26 July 2022. Still terrific!

This series is excellent! Some of the Mercy Thompson books lagged a bit and I think that's one of the main reasons I stopped reading them years ago (I started back up recently). But so far that has not been a problem with the A&O series.

In the midst of lots of action and suspense, we're learning more about Anna and Charles... as they learn more about each other. And after finally finding herself in a safe pack, Anna is also coming into her own. It will be interesting to watch her as she becomes more and more capable and learns more and more about her strengths as an Omega and as Charles' mate.

I thought this book was good. However, I will not be writing a full review on it, as the next book "Fair Game" has tainted any feelings I had for this book prior.

Warning to those who want to read the next books - Please, please check trigger warnings if you are sensitive to them.

Not as great as the first book and I totally enjoy Mercy's books more. I'm not sure exactly what I feel this book is missing though...
I really was expecting more growth to overcoming her past abuse, but by the beginning of this book, it seems halfway settled? It is still mentioned and brought up, but not as important as I thought it would be.

Love Charles and Bran when he pops up. Glad to see Tom and Moira again!!

I think I'm waiting to see Anna really grow into her own person.
